WorldSkills Kicks off in Geraldton

The first of several regional WorldSkills Australia competitions to be held at Central Regional TAFE took place at the Geraldton campus on Friday, September 8.

Seven (7) students from the Vocational Education and Training in Schools (VETiS) Plumbing program participated in the competition. This is the first time a VETiS plumbing competition has been held in Western Australia.

Participants showcased their skills against others in their field by completing a series of projects and tasks throughout the day. They were scored and judged by Robert Verryt, Head of Programs Construction & Resource Industries at Central Regional TAFE (CRTAFE), Tim Humble, Trades Plumber and Sam Chetcuti, Lecturer at CRTAFE.

Regional-level medallists may be selected to progress and represent TeamWA at next year’s WorldSkills Australia National Competition in Sydney, the nation’s largest trades and skills showcase.

Central Regional TAFE Managing Director Bill Swetman said he was very pleased the College could host the first VETiS Plumbing competition in the state.

“WorldSkills Australia Regional Competitions are more than just a chance to shine – they give students an opportunity to challenge their skills and gain valuable feedback from well-regarded industry professionals” Mr Swetman said.

“By giving it a go students demonstrate their dedication towards their training and development and also showcase their skills to current and future employers” he said.

“We are very proud of the efforts the students put in on the day as well as the hard work and preparation that CRTAFE staff have put in so that the competition could be made available to regional students”.

“We are looking forward to the other WorldSkills competitions being held in the coming months at our Geraldton and Kalgoorlie Campuses”.

Gold, Silver and Bronze medallists will be announced at a presentation at CRTAFE on October 13, once scores have been tallied and scoring cards reviewed.
