Course requirements

Please note that the following course requirements apply to the combined offering of qualifications in the Hair and Beauty area:

Completion of year 10 or equivalent.

Students will also need to complete the LLN Robot test to enable us to see the level of literacy and numeracy of the individual.  This will help us determine if we need CAVVS, USIQ or an aboriginal student mentor present in the class. 

Students must participate in an interview with the lecturer (face to face or phone) prior to enrolment to give them an information regarding the course; how much commitment is required; what needs to be purchased before the course starts, and dates concerning the course.

Students who decide to enrol must complete a client needs summary with the lecturer on enrolment to gain information regarding the needs of the student. This could include the need for literacy and numeracy support, need for financial support or any other information that could impact on the students’ ability to learn. Action can then be taken to address these needs to enable the students to succeed in the course. 

Students must be able to stand for long periods of time during the day to be able to perform hair and beauty treatments on at least two to four clients per day to prepare the students for average industry client appointments.

All student must be open to develop communication skills to enable them to work with clients and students.

Students must be willing to have all treatments performed on themselves and perform on others to develop the skills needed for industry.

In the Hair and Beauty area, this qualification is delivered as part of a package of qualifications that includes the below courses.

52774WA Certificate II in Leadership

The Certificate II in Leadership is a pathway to the Certificate III in Leadership course. The Certificate II in Leadership can be customised to a specific industry or community environment and also provides the clients with the necessary employability skill which will support their transition to work, further education and community participation.

SHB20216 Certificate II in Salon Assistant

This is a preparatory qualification which provides a defined and limited range of basic skills and knowledge used in hairdressing salons by individuals who provide assistance with client services. These routine and repetitive tasks are completed under direct supervision and with guidance from hairdressers who manage the client service.

The combined skills and knowledge do not provide for a job outcome as a hairdresser and this qualification is intended to prepare individuals for further training.

SHB20116 Certificate II in Retail Cosmetic

This qualification reflects the role of retail sales personnel involved in a defined range of tasks to sell and demonstrate beauty or cosmetic products. They follow known routines and procedures and work under direct supervision.

This qualification provides a pathway to work as a retail sales consultant in any business that sells beauty or cosmetic products and services. This can include beauty and hairdressing salons, retail outlets and department stores.

This course is also available as a stand-alone course in our Business area.
