This entry level qualification provides learners with basic industry skills and knowledge, and upon successful completion aims to enable opportunities for students to transition into a traineeship within the Community Services sector (at the Certificate III level) or provide them with skills and knowledge to work in the Disability sector.

This qualification provides students with the knowledge and skills to perform the following tasks associated with the disability sector:

  • Provide support services to a client including following an individual's plan
  • Reporting and completing documentation
  • Facilitate the empowerment of people with a disability including fostering their rights and facilitating choice
  • Follow safe work practices
  • Develop an understanding of diverse groups and how to work and communicate with them
  • Communicate effectively with clients, colleagues, management and other industry providers
  • Recognise potentially hazardous manual tasks
  • Recognise and respond to life-threatening emergencies

Half price*

Half price courses under the Lower Fees, Local skills initiative are half price for everyone, plus there are fee caps. The fees cap means that regardless of how much your course fees are, under Lower fees, local skills you will not pay more than a set total amount.

The concession rate course fee cap of $400 (from the date the new fee applied) applies to:

  • All students aged 15-24 years
  • Persons and dependents of persons holding: 
    • a pensioner concession card;
    • a repatriation health benefits card issued by the Department of Veterans' Affairs; or
    • a Health Care Card
  • Persons and dependents of persons in receipt of the Youth Allowance, AUSTUDY or ABSTUDY
  • Dependents of persons who are inmates of a custodial institution
  • Secondary school-aged persons, not enrolled at school.

The non-concession course fee cap is $1,200 (from the date the new fee applied). 

Please note: Only course tuition fees are half price for the Lower fees, local skills qualifications. You may be required to pay other fees for resources that are specifically needed for your course.

There are no entry requirements for this qualification although the program business rules stipulate the following:

Prior to the commencement of their training, students must attend a selection process and satisfy the selection panel that they are suitable to participate in the program.

Aged care and disability care sectors have specific requirements to ensure a safe environment for clients and employees.  Students must satisfy the selection panel that they will be able to meet these requirements prior to commencing their work placement.

RTO entry requirements for the student  include:

Students are required to attend a selection process as identified above prior to enrolment in the program and satisfy the selection panel that they meet requirements of the aged and disability care sectors in regard to safety.  This includes:

  • Students must provide a National Police Clearance that does not identify any offences that would prevent the student from working in the Aged or Disability care sector.
  • Students may be asked to provide a Working with Children’s check depending on the placement agencies requirements.
  • Students must be physically fit to perform physical duties associated with providing personal care and domestic support including but not limited to:
    • Manual handling tasks such as hoisting and transferring
    • Assisting with personal care tasks such as showering and feeding
    • Assisting with domestic duties such as cleaning and making beds
  • Students may be asked to provide a medical clearance to support your application.
  • Students may be asked to provide evidence of immunisation status and may be required to have additional immunisations depending on the placement agencies requirements.

Delivery location, important dates and study options

Training at CRTAFE will be offered with a blended, flexible delivery model to enable social distancing measures during the COVID-19 pandemic. This approach may include a combination of online and classroom based delivery, as well as practical and work experience placements. While the mode of delivery may vary, the content and key learning outcomes of the course will remain the same. Lecturers will provide specific instructions to their student groups on how training will be undertaken and the support available to them.
