This qualification is suitable for people who work as a Master IV Near Coastal skipper in the maritime industry. This qualification is suitable for those sailing as Master on vessels up to 45 metres in length within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) or a Mate on vessels up to 100 metres in length.
You will gain the following skills:
- Handling cargo
- Applying vessel stability knowledge
- Checking and maintaining equipment
- Manoeuvring vessels
- Communicating effectively in a marine environment
- Applying survival skills at sea
- Navigating a safe passage, and
- Applying ship structural knowledge.

- Enjoy the ocean and outdoors
- Have sound command of spoken and written english
- Be able to work independently as well as within a team
- Have strong communication skills to interact with people from a range of various cultures and backgrounds
- Be able to cope in field work with varied weather conditions (e.g., heat, rain, cold, wind)
- Sound mechanical and electrical aptitude
- Possess a good fitness level to carry out practical and/or manual work including, providing first aid, swimming and remaining afloat, boarding a life raft unassisted, jumping safely from a height
- Be comfortable in confined spaces
- Be able to follow instructions and Work Health and Safety procedures
