This qualification will give you the basic skills you need to start work in the fishing sector of the seafood industry. This course will teach you a broad range of routine processes and procedures which may include maintaining fishing gear, operating small vessels, using deck equipment, processing and basic marine science skills.

You will gain knowledge and skills in:

  • Assisting with operation of fishing gear and equipment
  • Basic processing and temperature control of harvest
  • General cleaning and maintenance of equipment and vessel, and
  • Handling, harvesting and sorting by-catch.

Designed to suit individuals seeking Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) Marine Radio Operator’s VHF Certificate of Proficiency.

This Skill Set is aimed at individuals who require proficiency in the use of marine VHF radio and telephone equipment on commercial vessels. You will learn how to transmit and receive information to and from ship to ship and ship to shore. 

The Marine Radio Operator’s VHF Skill Set is part of the MAR Maritime Training Package.

Please note: before undertaking this course individuals seeking certification for the Marine Radio Operator’s VHF Certificate of Proficiency should check with ACMA to determine certification requirements

Learn the skills and knowledge to become a safe recreational boat skipper

Every skipper of a registrable recreational vessel powered by a motor greater than 4.5kwp (6hp) is required to hold a Recreational Skippers Ticket.  

You will gain the theory and practical training to be a safe recreational skipper. A power boat is provided for this training. 

 

Course Content

The below nationally recognised unit of competency is included in this course:

MEM50010          Respond to boating emergencies and incidents

MEM50009         Safely operate a mechanically powered recreational boat

 

Certification

Upon successful completion you will receive a Statement of Attainment.

You will receive a Recreational Skippers Ticket from the Department of Transport.

In this course students will learn the necessary skills to use marine VHF radio to transmit and receive information.

Topics covered include:

  • Transmit and receive information by marine radio including using very high frequency and high frequency radio
  • Regulations relating to marine radio use 
  • Maintenance and fault-finding procedures on radio equipment and power supplies 
  • How to operate emergency position indicating beacons (EPIRBs) and search and rescue radar transponders (SARTs)
  • How to use AIS man overboard (AIS-MOB) devices and digital selective calling MOB (DSC-MOB) devices
