Because of Her We Can - Central Regional TAFE Celebrates NAIDOC 2018

Students, staff and community members came together at the Central Regional TAFE Geraldton campus recently to take part in the college’s annual NAIDOC event.

NAIDOC celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This year’s theme ‘Because of Her We Can’ celebrated the invaluable contributions that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have made – and continue to make - to our communities, our families, our rich history and to our nation.

The celebrations commenced with a NAIDOC dinner at the Zeewijk Training Restaurant, followed by lunchtime celebrations at the Aboriginal Learning Centre.

Activities on the day included face and pebble painting, health displays from GRAMS, free health checks from CRTAFE nursing students and a petting zoo, as well as displays showcasing Aboriginal training and Reconciliation. Our thanks to the students from Waggrakine Primary School who entertained guests with a special NAIDOC song called Because of Her We Can.

CRTAFE Aboriginal Elder On-Campus, Mr Allan Headland, delivered the Acknowledgment of Country, community member Nola Gregory performed a poem she had written in honor of the theme, and the special guest speaker was Krystyn Bonney, former CRTAFE student and Miss NAIDOC 2018 runner up.

Central Regional TAFE Managing Director, Bill Swetman, congratulated everyone involved in organising the event, in particular the Aboriginal Training Services and Student Support Services teams.

“It was a great event with people from across the College and the local community coming together to celebrate NAIDOC,” Mr Swetman said.
