Excitement Builds for WorldSkills Competitions

Competitors are making their final preparations as excitement builds for three WorldSkills Australia regional competitions to be held at Central Regional TAFE this week.

The Kalgoorlie Campus will host two automotive competitions for the Goldfields region. The Vocational Education & Training in Schools (VETiS) competition will be held this Wednesday 25 October and the Automotive Open Competition on Thursday 26October.

A hairdressing competition for the Mid-West region will be held at the Geraldton Campus this Sunday 29 October.

Participants are able to showcase their skills against others in their field by completing a series of projects and tasks throughout the day. They are scored and judged by experienced industry professionals.

Held around the country every two years, regionals give young locals the opportunity to compete in their trade and potentially take their skills to the national and international level. Regional medallists may be selected to progress and represent TeamWA at next year’s WorldSkills Australia National Championship in Sydney (the nation’s largest trades and skills showcase), and a select group of national winners are invited to compete in the WorldSkills international competition.

Central Regional TAFE Managing Director Bill Swetman said the WorldSkills competitions give students an opportunity to challenge their skills and gain valuable feedback from well-regarded industry professionals.

“These competitions boost young people’s confidence and career prospects.” Mr Swetman said.

“By giving it a go students demonstrate their dedication towards their training and development and also showcase their skills to current and future employers” he said.

“The competitions play a pivotal role in unearthing local talent and can provide new opportunities. I look forward to seeing what our regional competitors can produce this year” he said.

WorldSkills Australia CEO Brett Judd said: “It is terrific to see young people testing their skills at a regional level, and often they surprise themselves with what they are able to achieve.”

The Goldfields automotive competitions will be held from 8am-5pm at the CRTAFE trades block on Wilson Street, Kalgoorlie. The Mid-West hairdressing competition will be held at the Geraldton Campus Evolution Training Salon, 175 Fitzgerald Street.

The general public are welcome to attend at any time throughout the day to show their support.
