Goldfields Major Award winners announced at 2018 student graduation

Central Regional TAFE celebrated their 2018 graduating students and announced the Goldfields Major Award winners at their annual Graduation and Awards evening held on Tuesday 19 March 2019.
The award recipients were:

• Northern Star Resources Apprentice of the Year
Luke Belgrove

• Norton Gold Fields Trainee of the Year
Nikita Muir

• BHP Billiton – Nickel West - Aboriginal Student of the Year
Charmaine Champion

• Hahn Electrical Contractors Vocational Student of the Year
Michael Ajok

The event was attended by family, friends and sponsors who presented the major awards on the night. Guest speaker Braden Shilton, a former TAFE student, impressed the audience with his inspirational words of advice for the graduates. Braden completed his apprenticeship in 2018 and has now opened a successful building and construction business.

The evening also celebrated the achievements of Central Regional TAFE’s Kalgoorlie campus 2018 graduates. There were close to 350 eligible graduates from the campus, who completed their studies in 2018 ranging from Certificate I to Diploma level.

Central Regional TAFE Managing Director Bill Swetman said the Graduation and Awards evening was a highlight on the college’s annual events calendar.

“It was fantastic to see family, friends, industry partners and members of the community come together to support our students who have made a great effort to finish their training” he said.
“The support by the local community in the Goldfields has always been strong and we are proud of this fact” he said.

We thank our sponsors and industry partners for not only their support for the awards but also for their ongoing commitment to the future success of vocational education and training in our region” he said.
Michael Ajok winner of the Vocational Student of the Year Award said he felt on top of the world.

“I appreciate all the support and encouragement that I have received. To get this recognition today really boosts and encourages me for the future” he said.

“My training in mining at TAFE was well organised and my lecturer supported me all the way. I hope my qualification and plans for future professional development will lead me to study engineering and become a Mine Manager one day” he said.

Mr Ajok who graduated with an Advanced Diploma in Metalliferous Mining gave the student address on the night and spoke about his journey as a native from Sudan who was helping to support his family through their education. They then encouraged him to do something for himself which lead him to a desire to study at TAFE in order to build his mining management skills.

Charmaine Champion, this year’s Aboriginal Student of the Year, has overcome very emotionally challenging circumstances to complete her studies. Graduating with a Certificate III in Beauty Services this year, has been a highlight and important achievement for her.

“It’s just amazing. I’m so happy! It was a struggle and hard work with three kids but we got there” she said.

“I’ve now re-enrolled to complete my Certificate IV in Beauty Therapy this year and hope to go on to do the Diploma next year. I would love to open up my own salon one-day” she said.

Ms Champion said she is driven by the desire to be a good role model for her children and dreams to open a home based salon to encourage greater access for the Aboriginal community.

Nikita Muir recipient of the Trainee of the Year Award said she was grateful for the support she received during her time at TAFE and for the new opportunities available to her.

“I am now the Community Engagement Officer at Headspace Kalgoorlie and I know the community services training I received at TAFE really helps me in this role everyday” she said.

Major award winners will have the opportunity to apply for the 2019 WA State Training Awards. Central Regional TAFE had two state award finalists last year.

All graduates and award nominees were able to enjoy delicious refreshments on the night whilst networking with guests from local industry and the community.
