Central Regional TAFE (CR TAFE) Northam campus hosted the 2025 Graduation and Awards Ceremony at the Northam Town Hall on Monday 23 March, celebrating the achievements of graduates and recognising Major Award winners across a diverse range of study areas.
In 2025, more than 2,100 students successfully completed their training with CR TAFE across nine campuses, including over 383 graduates from the Wheatbelt region. On the evening, eight students were recognised as recipients of Major Awards for their outstanding achievements.
The Wheatbelt Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year Award, sponsored by Ballardong Aboriginal Corporation, was presented to Tamika Henry, who graduated with a Certificate III in Animal Care Services. Tamika plans to continue her training by completing a Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing, with aspirations to become a qualified veterinary nurse and potentially undertaking further study in Animal Science.
The Wheatbelt Apprentice of the Year Award, sponsored by Lions International, was awarded to Ryan Steer, who completed his Certificate III in Agricultural Mechanical Technology apprenticeship with Boekemans Machinery in Northam. Ryan plans to further develop his skills through training as a Heavy Plant Technician, with the long‑term ambition of establishing his own business in the Wheatbelt.
The Wheatbelt Cultural Diversity Training Award, sponsored by Bendigo Bank Toodyay & Districts, was presented to My Quyen Pham, who graduated with a Certificate II in General Education for Adults. Quyen has since enrolled in the Education Assistant course and aspires to become a kindergarten teacher, inspiring future generations of students.
The Wheatbelt Vocational Student of the Year Award, sponsored by Evoke Living Homes, was awarded to Isabel Coutinho, who graduated with a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care. Balancing her studies with work and family responsibilities, Isabel demonstrated remarkable resilience and determination and has since commenced the Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care.
The Wheatbelt Trainee of the Year Award, sponsored by the Shire of Northam, was presented to Hannah Goedhart‑Hutchings, who completed a Certificate III in Automotive Sales. Hannah’s dedication has been recognised beyond the workplace, having been selected as a regional finalist for the John Deere Apprentice of the Year Awards in both 2024 and 2025, representing the region in Queensland against finalists from across Australia and New Zealand.
The James Dawson Award, sponsored by Best Lives, recognises the achievements of a student with a disability or medical condition. The award was presented to Devon Cairns, who graduated with a Certificate III in Animal Care. Devon’s resilience, determination and passion for working with animals have distinguished him as a deserving recipient, and he now hopes to pursue a fulfilling career working with animals.
The Wheatbelt International Student of the Year Award, sponsored by the Wheatbelt Development Commission, was presented to Laura Mendez Santander, who graduated with a Diploma of Nursing. Laura’s achievements have been further recognised through the awarding of two regional scholarships, acknowledging both her academic success and community contribution.
The Wheatbelt School‑Based Apprentice or Trainee of the Year Award, sponsored by Liberty Balloon Flights, was awarded to Wayne Donovan Jr, who completed a Certificate II in Construction Pathways – Building Maintenance. Wayne also excelled in the VETiS Regional Carpentry Competition in Northam, earning first place and a gold medal. His performance secured selection into the Western Australian squad, highlighting his strong potential within the building and construction industry.
CR TAFE Acting Managing Director Karen Watts praised students for their commitment and achievements.
“Central Regional TAFE’s Graduation and Awards events are a valuable opportunity to celebrate our students’ success,” Ms Watts said.
“In 2025, we saw students from across all campuses excel throughout their learning journey and exceed expectations.”
“CR TAFE students continue to demonstrate dedication and determination in completing their training. Their achievements place them on strong pathways to rewarding careers and serve as inspiration within their communities.”
Ms Watts also acknowledged the impact of graduates on the Wheatbelt region.
“More than 380 qualified and job‑ready graduates are now prepared to contribute to local businesses and industries, including agriculture, early childhood education and care, health, local government, automotive, engineering and community services.”
“They are also ready to pursue further study and advance their own career aspirations. Sometimes people are surprised by just how broad the range of courses available is at their local TAFE.”
