This qualification reflects the role of workers who provide self-directed recovery-oriented support for people affected by mental illness and psychiatric disability. Work involves implementing community-based programs and activities focusing on mental health, mental illness and psychiatric disability. Work is undertaken in a range of community contexts such as community based non-government organisations; home based outreach; centre-based programs; respite care; residential services, rehabilitation programs; clinical settings; or supporting people in employment.

To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have completed at least 80 hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of units of competency.

Important information

Learners are required to provide evidence of adequate language, literacy and numeracy skills to successfully undertake the program's academic and workplace experience requirements, prior to commencing the program. Learners will be interviewed during enrolment and a Client Needs Summary will be completed to identify any limitations to these requirements. Action will be taken to address these limitations.

A current National Police Clearance and Working with Children’s Check are required prior to work placement in most community and mental health settings.

Job opportunities

This qualification applies to environmental assistants, environmental technicians and similar personnel employed by enterprises and Commonwealth, state/territory/local governments in the sectors listed above. Many of these employees are engaged in the monitoring of environmental impacts at industrial sites. They operate monitoring equipment, collect samples and conduct tests both in the field and at site laboratories. Other employees may collect a range of field data relating to the suitability of land and water use and process and present this data using geographical information systems (GIS) software.

Entrance Criteria

Students who decide to enrol MUST complete a Learner Needs Questionnaire. This information and evidence is gathered from learners seeking entry into the TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. This includes:

  • Current or proposed area for teaching and assessment
  • Evidence of relevant vocational unit of competency and/or qualification and/or
  • Details of industry knowledge and experience
  • Access to a group of at least eight individuals to deliver training.

Achievement of this qualification by trainers is a requirement of the Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) 2015.

Work placement

You will have the opportunity to attend work placement for two weeks of each term in local vet clinics and other animal care areas such as a wildlife parks, pet shops, dog rescues, farriers or stock feeds. Work placement allows you to gain skills in dealing with rural veterinary practices and animal care. Central Regional TAFE's Vet Nursing places an emphasis on understanding large animal and rural enterprises to help support farmers and station clients dealing with animal care over large distances.

Important information

To be successful in this course you must be well organised, efficient, be able to think on your feet and deal with dirty, smelly and challenging situations, and able to accept and deal with a variety of views and ethical decisions.

Attendance, studying and assessment

For the full time face-2-face course you will attend the College Campus at either Geraldton or Muresk 3 days per week for lectures, practical demonstrations, field trips and excursions.

Students can study vet nursing locally at either location (student accommodation is available at both campuses) rather than moving to Perth. For external workplace assessment you need to be working either paid or unpaid in a veterinary clinic to gain practical skills Study is supported with on-line learning, Facebook contact and regular contact with your lecturer, which may include visits to their clinic. You can choose electives which are suited to your place of work.

Licensing and Legislation

There is a direct link between this qualification and approval to perform veterinary nursing duties under the Western Australian (WA) Veterinary Surgeons Act 1960 as amended. The WA Veterinary Surgeons Board must approve qualified persons to carry out the duties of veterinary nurses and must authorise persons enrolled in approved courses to perform the duties of trainee veterinary nurses. Candidates should confirm the regulatory requirements that apply in their relevant state or territory.
