Set sail for a rewarding career at sea.

This qualification is suitable for people who work as Marine Engineers in the maritime industry, as Chief Engineer on vessels with propulsion power up to 750 kW and Second Engineer on vessels with propulsion power up to 1500 kW in the exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

Students will develop the following skills:

  • Taking charge of an engine room with the main propulsion of less than 750kW
  • Applying safety procedures
  • Applying survival skills at sea
  • Extinguishing fires
  • Refuelling vessels adhering to marine pollution (MARPOL) guidelines
  • Performing basic engineering calculations
  • Operating and maintaining deck machinery
  • Operating and maintaining auxiliary power systems, and
  • Operating and maintaining extra-low and low voltage electrical systems and equipment.

This course will be FREE from 1 January 2023. The course fees are 100 per cent subsidised by the WA State Government.

Successful completion of this qualification will provide you with some of the requirements for certification as a Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 Near Coastal as defined by the National Standard for Commercial Vessels (NSCV) Part D.

Certification will require:

  • meeting the medical and eyesight requirements specified in the NSCV Part D and AMSA final assessment,
  • qualifying sea service and completed Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) approved task book or qualifying sea service,
  • achievement of the Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 Near Coastal),
  • meeting additional requirements (as specified by AMSA),
  • passing the AMSA Mandated Practical Assessment (AMPA),
  • completing and submitting a certificate of competency application to AMSA.

A Traineeship is a full-time employment-based training program usual lasting twelve (12) months or more.  Learning is predominantly in the workplace and may be supplemented by training at TAFE.  You must have a Training Contract to enrol in a Traineeship Course.
