Our Batavia Coast Maritime Institute (BCMI) campus is a state of the art, research and training facility that is complete across all things marine. Located right on the oceanfront of Separation Point in Geraldton, it specialises in providing education in the areas of aquaculture, fishing operations, coastal and marine environmental science, marine tourism, maritime operations and marine engine driving. A Certificate II in Aquaculture will provide you with the practical skills and knowledge to assist in the care and maintenance of fish stocks. You will learn skills in food handling, controlling pests, predators and diseases, handling and harvesting stock, maintaining and manipulating the water environment and applying chemicals and biological agents. It provides individuals with skills and knowledge to work as a field hand in an aquaculture operation such as a hatchery, sea cage or pond facility. It is applicable to school-based studies.

This high level qualification trains you to work in a management or leadership role within the aquaculture sector of the seafood industry. In this role individuals design, plan and implement programs and sustainable practices for an aquaculture enterprise that comply with a wide range of legislative and regulatory requirements.
The environments in which these individuals work include:
- aquaculture farms or fishout/put-and-take operations
- companies providing contract specialist services for aquaculture operations
- companies providing consultancy, advisory, equipment sales or other services
- hatcheries and nurseries

It involves a defined range of skilled operations, usually within a range of broader related activities involving known routines, methods, and procedures, with some discretion and judgement in selecting equipment, services, or contingency measures and within known time constraints.
You will gain the skills and knowledge to work safely as a heavy haulage truck driver in the road transport industry. Participants will obtain one of the following licenses:

This qualification will give you the basic skills you need to start work in the fishing sector of the seafood industry. This course will teach you a broad range of routine processes and procedures which may include maintaining fishing gear, operating small vessels, using deck equipment, processing and basic marine science skills.

- Assisting with operation of fishing gear and equipment
- Basic processing and temperature control of harvest
- General cleaning and maintenance of equipment and vessel, and
- Handling, harvesting and sorting by-catch.

Heavy Vehicle Driving Operations Skill Set

This skill set has been designed to promote new entrants and support upskilling of existing workers in the heavy haulage truck driving industry.
In this training program you will learn how to:
- Follow work health and safety procedures
- Carry out inspection of vehicles
- Secure, load and unload cargo of goods
- Apply work fatigue management strategies
- Obtain a forklift licence (subject to meeting Worksafe requirements)
- Obtain a truck licence (subject to meeting Department of Transport requirements)
- Ensure the safety of the transport industry (chain of responsibility).
The driving instruction training component of the program is conducted in a range of conditions and locations, with coaching from qualified and experienced drivers.
Subject to meeting the Department of Transport licensing requirements, participants may apply for one of the following licences:

Designed to suit individuals seeking Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) Marine Radio Operator’s VHF Certificate of Proficiency.
This Skill Set is aimed at individuals who require proficiency in the use of marine VHF radio and telephone equipment on commercial vessels. You will learn how to transmit and receive information to and from ship to ship and ship to shore.
Please note:
The Marine Radio Operator’s VHF Skill Set is part of the MAR Maritime Training Package and is a requirement as part of that qualification.

- with propulsion power that is unlimited for an outboard engine or up to 500 kW for an inboard engine.
Can carry passengers:
- inshore, and
- or as a tender or auxiliary vessel within 3 nautical miles (nm) of a parent vessel within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

This qualification is suitable for people who work as a Coxswain Grade 2 Near Coastal skipper in the maritime industry. This qualification enables graduates to command a commercial marine vessel:
- up to 12 metres in length
- with propulsion power that is unlimited for an outboard engine or up to 100 kW for an inboard engine
- that is not carrying passengers, and to operate this vessel
- in sheltered waters, and
- or as a tender or auxiliary vessel within 3 nautical miles (nm) of a parent vessel within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) or within 3 nm from point of departure, shore base or aquaculture lease.
You will also gain the following skills:
- Handling a vessel less than 12 metres in length
- Applying basic maintenance and environmental knowledge
- Applying safety procedures at sea, and
- Demonstrating seamanship skills.

This course will provide students with the knowledge and skills to conduct in-service safety inspections and testing of single phase portable electrical equipment in their workplace. Students will gain knowledge and experience in:
- Ensuring the portable electrical equipment is safe to operate in accordance with Western Australia legislation and regulations
- Inspecting and testing portable equipment to the standards set out by AS/NZS3760:2010
- Tag equipment and complete documentation to record results of the inspection and testing procedure to the standards set out by AS/NZS3760:2010
