The Batavia Coast Maritime Institute (BCMI) campus is an award-winning state of the art training, research and development facility located on the oceanfront of the picturesque Separation Point in Geraldton.
Opening in 2006 after ten years of planning and development, BCMI has positioned itself as a world-class centre of excellence, specialising in the areas of aquaculture, marine and environmental science research and training.
Our wide range of partnerships and collaborations with industry allows the integration of industry, research and education throughout a broad range of fields, attracting students both locally and internationally. Students at BCMI have the unique advantage of learning and developing skills within a commercially operational environment, providing them with a realistic and hands-on training experience.

The BCMI offers nationally recognised qualifications Certificate 1 up to Diploma level in Aquaculture, Laboratory Science, Conservation and Land Management, Marine and Environmental Science, as well as Maritime qualifications.
Facilities
Free parking is available on campus and there are designated parking bays available for people with a disabilities.
Our computer lab is fully equipped with workstations, a wide range of software and internet access to encourage students to undertake their studies in a welcoming and well equipped environment.
Enjoy our friendly indoor and outdoor space where students can recharge and relax during study breaks. It is equipped with a microwave, fridge, and tea/coffee making facilities.
The BCMI maintains a fleet of vessels including a 20m commercial training vessel and numerous smaller boats that are used for fishing, maritime and aquaculture training. The 20m vessel, sails under the title of Master Class and is used for CR TAFE coordinated scuba diving courses, local charters and for travel to the amazing Abrolhos Islands, situated approximately 80 kms (43 NM) from Geraldton.

The marine simulator is based within the BCMI campus and can provide hands on maritime training in ship steering using existing port maps, in conjunction with guidance by our industry experienced trainers.
The aquaculture hatchery is where it all begins for our fish. We boast state of the art equipment and an advanced filtration system. The programs focus on production of marine ornamentals, popular food fish and pearl oysters.
The BCMI facillity and its staff are recognised as lead researchers in the breeding and production of marine ornamental fish and we are the biggest supplier of cultured ‘Nemos’ or clown fish, Australia‐wide.
A fully equipped, state‐of‐the‐art laboratory is well established and is widely used for commercial water and soil analysis.
The growth of the Conservation and Land Management industry has led to the addition of five plant shade houses, accredited by the Nursery & Garden Industry Association of Australia as best practise horticulture greenhouses and nursery facilities.

A Certificate II in Aquaculture will provide you with the practical skills and knowledge to assist in the care and maintenance of fish stocks. You will learn skills in food handling, controlling pests, predators and diseases, handling and harvesting stock, maintaining and manipulating the water environment and applying chemicals and biological agents. It provides individuals with skills and knowledge to work as a field hand in an aquaculture operation such as a hatchery, sea cage or pond facility. It is applicable to school-based studies.

This high level qualification trains you to work in a management or leadership role within the aquaculture sector of the seafood industry. In this role individuals design, plan and implement programs and sustainable practices for an aquaculture enterprise that comply with a wide range of legislative and regulatory requirements.

- companies providing contract specialist services for aquaculture operations

- that is not carrying passengers, and to operate this vessel
- in sheltered waters, and
- or as a tender or auxiliary vessel within 3 nautical miles (nm) of a parent vessel within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) or within 3 nm from point of departure, shore base or aquaculture lease.
You will also gain the following skills:
- Handling a vessel less than 12 metres in length
